Consumables

MODULE - Blacksmithing Workshop Consumables

A functional blacksmithing workshop consumes a steady stream of materials during forging, finishing, and maintenance.

These consumables are items that are regularly used up or degraded and must be replenished.

Below is a structured breakdown based on common shop workflows.

1. Forge Fuels

Fuel determines forge temperature, efficiency, and operating cost.

Common fuels

  • Bituminous coal – traditional fuel; forms coke during use and reaches high temperatures.

  • Coke – cleaner-burning derivative of coal; fewer impurities.

Gases (propane and natural gases must be purchased locally due to transport issues)

2. Steel and Metal Stock

Your primary raw material. This is consumed as you forge projects.

Typical stock types : Mild steel (most common), High-carbon steel, Tool steel, Spring steel (often recycled leaf springs),

Damascus billet materials (e.g., 1084 + 15N20)

Common shapes : Round bar, Square bar, Flat bar, Plate, Billets.

Many smiths also keep scrap steel for experimentation.

3. Fluxes

Flux prevents oxidation during forge welding.

Most common : Borax (sodium borate) – standard forge welding flux, Borax with iron powder additives,

Commercial blacksmith flux blends.

Consumed quickly when doing pattern welding or forge welding.

4. Abrasives and Grinding Supplies

Essential for shaping, cleaning, and finishing metal.

Common consumables : Grinding wheels, Cutting discs, Flap discs, Sanding belts (36–1200 grit), Sandpaper sheets,

Scotch-Brite / surface conditioning belts

Knife makers go through dozens of belts per project.

5. Quenching and Heat Treatment Media

Used during heat treatment.

Typical quench media : Brine, Commercial quench oils (e.g., Parks 50)

Oil eventually degrades and must be replaced.

6. Finishing Chemicals

Used for corrosion protection and visual finishing.

Examples : Ferric chloride (etching Damascus), Gun bluing, Wax (Renaissance wax, beeswax), Linseed oil,

Patina chemicals (liver of sulfur, etc.)

7. Shop Maintenance Consumables

These keep tools working and the shop safe :

Machine oil, Way oil, Penetrating oil, Wire brushes, Shop rags, Degreaser, Hand cleaner, Anti-scale compounds,

Refractory patch cement, Furnace cement, Forge liner materials (e.g., ceramic blanket).

8. Safety Consumables

Often overlooked but critical.

Common items : Leather gloves (wear out), Respirator filters, Earplugs, Face shield lenses and First-aid supplies.
